2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, which is an economic framework designed to connect economies in East Asia and Europe. To respond to the initiative, on Sept. 4, a “International Training Course on Solar Thermal Power Technology for developing countries along the Belt and Road” was held its opening ceremony in Beijing. This training course is fully funded by Bureau of International Cooperation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and organized by Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEE-CAS). There're 17 participants from 8 countries including Algeria, Nigeria, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, and Indonesia participated in the training. Dr. Zixin Li, Deputy Director of IEE-CAS, Prof. Zhifeng Wang, director of Renewable Energy Power Generation Technology Laboratory as well as Solar Thermal Utilization Technology Research Department of IEECAS, Ms. Zhu Yidi, director of International Cooperation of Science and Technology Department of IEE-CAS, and Ms. Fengli Du, Secretary General of China Solar Thermal Alliance (CSTA), attended the opening ceremony.
Dr. Zixin Li stated in his opening speech that the field of renewable energy is an important research direction of IEE-CAS. Currently, the Institute has been built into a research base type research institute mainly focused on the intersection of renewable energy technology, new power technology, and cutting-edge electrical sciences. Under the leadership of the Ministry of Science and Technology, IEECAS continues to support and participate in the “Innovation Mission” initiative, becoming an important force in promoting China's clean energy innovation development and international cooperation. In the field of solar thermal power generation, also known as concentrating solar power (CSP), we have achieved several firsts in China, even in Asia: the first experimental solar tower power plant in Asia, the first megawatt level parabolic trough solar thermal power plant, the first solar thermal power equipment testing center in China, and obtained the first CNAS laboratory accreditation certificate in the solar thermal power generation industry in China and the first international demonstration town with 100% renewable energy supply (electricity, heat, gas) that can be disconnected from the grid in Huangdi City, Zhangjiakou City. It is hoped that the teachers of the solar thermal utilization technology team of the Institute of Electrical Engineering can give full play to their rich experience and professional expertise in technical training, run this international training class well, let the students do learn something, so as to better serve the construction and development of the the “Belt and Road”.
“This training course aims to promote the research capacity of researchers in the field of solar thermal power technology among the developing countries along the Belt and Road , and facilitate long-term scientific and technological cooperation and academic dialogue among people of these countries.The trainees are technical and scientific researchers in the energy field, technical managers of enterprises, and government officials in charge of science and technology of the countries and regions along the the Belt and Road. The training course will last for two weeks and will learn solar thermal power generation and heat utilization related technologies will be taught through systematical classroom teaching and on-site professional visits and practice.” Dr. Dongqiang Lei, the person in charge of the training course and researcher of the IEE-CAS introduced.

According to the introduction, the classroom teaching of this training mainly includes basic knowledge of concentrating solar power (CSP) and medium and low- temperature of solar thermal utilization; solar tower, parabolic trough, linear Fresnel and dish solar thermal power system and key components technology; system design, operation and maintenance and system simulation technology of solar thermal power plants; solar thermal storage technology; solar thermochemistry and solar fuel technology; performance test technology of solar thermal power system and key components; as well as technical salons and academic exchanges. For the on site observation and practice, the trainees will visit the solar heating system based on cross-seasonal heat storage of IEECAS located in Huangdi (Yellow Emperor) City in Hebei Province, where is about 120 kilometers away from IEECAS. The solar heating system mainly include large-scale cross-seasonal pit heat storage, heliostat field, flat plate solar collectors. The second place to go is solar thermal power base of IEECAS in Yanqing district of Beijing, at the foot of Badaling Great Wall. The base include 1MW solar tower power plant, 1MW parabolic trough power plant, solar thermal key-components-performance Test Center and other facilities.
The trainees expressed that they will make full use of this rare opportunity to strengthen business learning and enhance mutual understanding, cooperation and exchange among the countries and regions along the “Belt and Road”.
