China State Council has approved the establishment of a renewable energy demonstration zone in north China’s Zhangjiakou city, which is jointly bidding with Beijing to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Zhangjiakou city, about 200 kilometers far fromBeijing, has abundant wind, solar and biomass resources and has set a goal to establish a world-leading “low-carbon Olympic zone”.
The development plan of the demonstration zone sets a high goal for CSP development, and it proposes developing a number of CSP demonstration projects in Bashang region and Chongli region. It is expected that by 2020 and 2030, the CSP installation capacity will reach 1GW and 6GW respectively.
According to the plan, by 2020, 55 percent of the electricity consumption in the zone, all the city transportation energy use, 40 percent of the urban household energy consumption, 50 percent of the commercial energy consumption will be met by renewable energy and 40 percent of the industrial enterprises located in the city have to realize zero carbon emission. By 2030, 80% of the power consumption will be met by renewable energy.
