2010 the 4th Sanya International CSP Forum was held successfully in Grand Soluxe Hotel& Resort Sanya, Hainan province on Aug. 17- 19, which was organized by Chinese Renewable Energy Society, Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics and Korean Solar Energy Society, hosted by Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences and National Alliance for Solar Thermal Energy, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), and co-hosted by Hainan Renewable Energy Association and Himin Solar Co., Ltd.
\
More than 300 representatives from China mainland, China Taiwan, South Korea, Spain, the United States, Germany, Italy and other countries and regions presented in the forum. The participants’ backgrounds cover a wide range, from governmental officer, researcher in universities and institutes, company representatives to investors and so on.

In the three-day long meeting, there’re more than 40 persons who made the presentations. The presented topics cover the technology, market and industry status of the concentrating solar power (CSP), and the critical S&T problems including materials, thermal storage, heat collection, system design and site selection in the CSP commercialization. In this year’s forum, two sessions were specially organized, one was for the 973 project and the other was for the national alliance for solar thermal industry, MOST, which were open to all participants in the conference for understanding the CSP status in basic research, high technology research and industrialization.

On the morning of August 17, Ms Ma Shukun, Secretary General of Institute of Electrical Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences presided the opening ceremony.
\
Those delivered the opening speeches include: Mr. Xu Jianzhong, chairman of the forum, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, director of Chinese Society of Engineering Thermophysics; Mr. Zheng Fangneng, director of Energy and Transportation Division of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization Department, MOST; Mr. Shi Dinghuan, counselor of State Council, director of Chinese Renewable Energy Society; Dr. Kang Youngheack, Committee member of IEA SolarPACES, Chairman of Korean Solar Energy Society (KSES).

Those presented in the opening ceremony also include: Mr. Zhao Zhongxian, academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, vice chairman of China Association for Science and Technology; Mr. Sun Honghang, Committee member of IEA SolarPACES, project responsible in Division of Energy and Transportation of High and New Technology Development and Industrialization Department, MOST; Mr. Gao Feng, deputy director of Planning and Coordination Division of Department of Development Planning, MOST; Mr. Chen Linxin, consultant of National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program); Dr. Wang Zhifeng, Committee member of IEA SolarPACES, director of National Alliance for Solar Thermal Energy, MOST; Dr. Taebeom Seo, Committee member of IEA SolarPACES, professor in Inha University.

Mr. Wang Zhifeng presided the later keynote speech session. Academician Xu, Dr. Kang and Mr. Huang Xiang, chief scientist in solar thermal power project of 973 Program gave the keynote speeches.

CSP has great advantages in compatibility with the existing coal-fired power plant and the gird. Owing to the use of conventional steam turbine, CSP can fully take the industrial production capacity and design & operation experiences of the coal plant sector. Nowadays it’s receiving higher and higher attention in the world. According to the latest report of IEA, CSP could provide 11% of the world’s electricity by 2050 and the generation cost would decrease by 20-25%.

In China, more and more people begin to take actively in. Currently, with the call of the China National Alliance for Solar Thermal Energy, MOST, the industry chain of CSP has begun to take shape. So far, China has the ability to supply key components used in CSP plants.

With the support of MOST, China has grasped the core technology in concentration, heat collection, high temperature thermal storage and system integration etc. The 1MWe solar tower plant is under construction and expected to operate by the end of this year. The 973 project started in beginning of this year. The 50MW CSP plant is going through the concession bidding procedures, which marks that CSP in China is moving to the industrialization. Besides, MOST has organized the national alliance for solar thermal industry to construct the innovation system of industry-university-institute. Mr. Zheng Fangneng from MOST expressed that MOST will further increase the input and support to the R&D of solar thermal utilization, to promote the all-temperature range development and application of solar energy in China.

The Sanya CSP forum was inaugurated in 2007 and is held in Sanya every year, which intends to provide a platform for communication, exchange and cooperation related with solar thermal technology. We believe the commercialization of CSP technology will speed up through our effort.
