A report, Renewable Energy Prospects: China, was released by International Renewable Energy Agency on Nov, 24, 2014. According to the report, China has become a global leader in renewable energy, and in 2013 China installed more new renewable energy capacity than all of Europe and the rest of the Asia Pacific region. The share of renewables in China’s energy mix is projected to reach 26% by 2030, and the required investment is USD 145 billion per year.
The report points out that two biggest challenges facing the Chinese CSP industry include resource assessment and system optimization and the expected installed capacity of CSP is 1.4 GW by 2018. Under current policies and investment patterns, the installed capacity of CSP is projected to reach 12GW by 2030. REmap 2030 estimates that it would be both technically and economically feasible to increase the installed capacity to 32 GW.
According to Mr. Adnan Z. Amin, Director-General of IRENA, China is the largest energy consumer in the world, and if China acts now to implement more renewable energy, it can reduce air pollution, enhance energy security, benefit its economy, and play a leading role in fighting climate change.
