On February 26, the largest-scale "Sand, Gobi, and Desert" new energy export base power project in China, with the highest total investment and the highest proportion of new energy, including the highest-altitude ultra-supercritical thermal power project, commenced construction in Golmud East Desert Base, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province. The project is invested and constructed by China Huadian Corporation LTD.

The Golmud East Desert Base, which has started construction, is a large-scale power export base based on photovoltaic and wind power in the desert, Gobi and desert areas of the Qaidam region in Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai Province. It is supported by clean coal power, electrochemical energy storage, and solar thermal power. The total investment of the project is approximately 80 billion yuan, with a total construction scale of 19.24 million kilowatts. The project will be planned in an integrated manner of "wind, photovoltaic, thermal, and energy storage," with new energy accounting for 85% of the installed capacity. In addition, the project will simultaneously construct an ±800 kV, 8 million kilowatt capacity "Qing-Gui Direct Current" ultra-high voltage (UHV) DC transmission channel to Guangxi for power consumption. This is the first UHV transmission channel in China that spans provinces and crosses operational areas.

After the project is completed and put into operation, it will be able to transmit about 36.5 billion kilowatt-hours of clean energy to Guangxi annually through the "Qing-Gui Direct Current" UHV DC transmission channel, which is equivalent to 14% of Guangxi's total electricity consumption in 2024.
